Eurobin man Cheyne Orcher, 23, received a maximum 18 months’ jail after pleading guilty in the Wodonga Magistrates’ Court yesterday to reckless conduct endangering life.
The court heard police tried to pull over Orcher early on September 18 after spotting him and a passenger driving on Beechworth Road.
But instead of stopping he sped off, overtaking on double lines, blind crests and bends.
Police first estimated his speed to be 120 to 130km/h, then at 170 to 180km/h.
They called off the pursuit when they suspected he was travelling at close to 190km/h.
They found Orcher and his passenger in bushland off Ewarts Road, Leneva just over two hours later.
Orcher, who already was on a 12-month suspended sentence for previous offences, will serve at least eight months in prison before he’s eligible for parole, after Magistrate John Murphy yesterday jailed him for six months.
Sgt Cameron Roberts, of Wodonga Highway Patrol, said the result showed those who fled from police would receive no leniency.
“It’s a whole lot easier to pull over and take a much smaller punishment that probably won’t affect your liberty,” Sgt Roberts said.
“We’re not prepared to see this sort of risk on the roads or near them.
“We’ll charge you with everything we can to deter this behaviour.”
In addition to pursuit charges, Orcher also pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods – a KTM motorcycle was found at his Eurobin home.
And when he is released from prison, he’ll find he has warrants outstanding for his arrest in NSW over a similar incident in Albury in February where he was spotted driving at 180km/h on the Hume Highway.
