Police said a maroon Ford Falcon sedan, NSW registration number CMN21F, was allegedly stolen from West Albury on Thursday night and used to steal petrol.
Wodonga police Detective Sgt Graeme Simpfendorfer said at 2.30am yesterday, the car was reversed through the glass front door of the Caltex service station at the Thomas Mitchell Drive and Chapple Street intersections.
He said the incident caused thousands of dollars in damage and a few hundreds dollars of property was stolen.
Sgt Simpfendorfer said three men wearing dark clothing and hooded jumpers allegedly spent a few minutes ransacking the store before driving off.
Albury police Insp David Cottee said police spotted the car in Lavington about 7.15am and monitored it before a highway patrol car attempted to intercept it in Wagga Road.
“A very short pursuit commenced that was terminated due to the conditions, bearing in mind the safety of the community,” Insp Cottee said.
“The same car popped up within 10 minutes.”
He said the car was spotted on Union Road where, again, a pursuit was terminated within seconds after the car failed to stop.
Sgt Simpfendorfer said a West Albury boy, 17, was charged with burglary, theft and criminal damage yesterday.
He will be summoned to face a children’s court at a later date.
Sgt Simpfendorfer said police had identified two suspects who were yet to be arrested.
He urged anyone with information, or who knew the whereabouts of the car, or recognises people in the closed-circuit television footage stills, to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
