That’s exactly what officers are trying to work out after a police issue gun disappeared from the Wangaratta police station almost two weeks ago.
Police said the officer in charge of the station, where the firearm is usually stored, became aware on June 11.
The officer instigated an immediate investigation.
A firearms audit is also being conducted.
It’s unknown if the gun was misplaced or was stolen.
Police are tight-lipped about the incident and a number of questions The Border Mail asked were left unanswered because police said, the investigation is “ongoing”.
Wangaratta police Inspector David Ryan would not comment.
Members have to sign in and sign out equipment used during a shift under supervision.
Police Association secretary Greg Davies said for this reason, he would be “very, very surprised” if the force cannot find the missing firearm.
“It’s almost impossible for anyone to spirit stuff away, whatever accountable equipment it is, without it being traced immediately back to them,” he said.
“If you don’t return it, it’s under your name.”
Mr Davies said it was a concern if any firearm, police issue or not, is missing.
“We don’t want firearms to be going into the wrong hands,” he said.
“Hopefully it’s been a minor failure in paperwork.”
