INDIGO Council has welcomed almost $300,000 in federal government funding towards Rutherglen’s Main Street rejuvenation project.

ALP candidate for Indi Robyn Walsh made the announcement yesterday on behalf of Regional Development Minister Catherine King.
The $283,536 grant is from the Regional Development Australia fund and is guaranteed to the shire, regardless of who wins the federal election.
Indigo mayor Barbara Murdoch was thrilled with the news.
“It’s a great project for Rutherglen and we hope to get some great results out of it,” she said.
While the council does not have a set timeline in place for project, Cr Murdoch said they would be undertaking public consultation over the next 12 months which would help guide its plans.
Traffic calming measures, safety issues, parking and beautifying the street will all be part of the project.
“We’ll be getting the community to come along and give us their views,” Cr Murdoch said.
“We want all the ideas out there of how to make it look better and be safer.”
The grant is part of round five of the Regional Development Australia fund, for which applications closed last month.
Cr Murdoch said the council was pleased to have received the funding so soon.
Ms Walsh said the funding was much needed for the community and would improve Rutherglen as both a tourist and local shopping destination, and that it was part of a total $971,000 investment.
“Safety issues with Rutherglen’s main street has been a concern for residents for a long time,” she said.
“The proposed traffic calming measures and new pedestrian crossings which make up part of this project will be welcomed by anyone who’s had the experience of trying to cross Rutherglen’s main street in safety.”
It comes less than a week after Labor announced Wodonga would receive $5.86 million for its city centre rejuvenation, out of the same regional development fund.
