VISUAL ARTS AND HISTORY: EXHIBITIONS AND EVENTS
ALBURY LIBRARY MUSEUM
THE STRAPPER
UNTIL SEPTEMBER 15
Tommy Woodcock was apprenticed as a jockey at 12, however it was clear that he was growing too tall, so instead he applied his natural symmetry with horses to the business of caring for them. Trainer Harry Telford recognised Tom’s particular affinity with Phar Lap and asked him to work as strapper to the horse full-time. Tom and Phar Lap soon formed such a close relationship that Phar Lap would take food from no one else. As Phar Lap’s trainer on the trip to America, Woodcock was heart-broken when the horse died. He remained a horse trainer until the age of 78 when he died at ‘The Stockyard’ in Yarrawonga in 1985. Woodcock left several of his own mementoes of Phar Lap to Wayne Hinchliffe of The Stockyard. It is this stunning Phar Lap memorabilia and photographs that will be on exhibit for two weeks only at the Library Museum as part of the Write around the Murray Festival.

FIRST FLIGHT
UNTIL FEBRUARY 2
In 1911, mechanics Azor Robbins and Alexander Porter embarked on an ambitious plan to build their own monoplane. Spurred on by the world’s new fascination for flight, the young mechanics set up shop in Albury and began work. In March 1913 the home-built monoplane was fitted with the Robbins and Porter-designed and constructed flat-four engine and underwent taxi trials. On July 27, 1913 it was taken to Bungowannah Park Estate and, in front of six witnesses, it flew six metres off the ground. The trial was repeated a few days later but after a mechanical malfunction the plane never flew again. A life-size replica of the Robbins and Porter monoplane has been hung from the Albury Library Museum ceiling.

RAD VCD 2013 will be a regional final year VCE artwork exhibition from a selection of VCE art, studio art, technology and design graduates from 2012. This exhibition will be an opportunity to give a voice to young people responding to their lives during their final year at school. It will also give fellow younger students a chance to view these works in the lead up to their VCE. We have encouraged all forms of media to enter. Traditional works such as paintings, photographs, ceramics, works on paper and drawings to textiles, artist’s books and folios, printmaking, sculpture, design, animation, documentaries, furniture and objects, interactive media and electronic projects. The exhibition is in the Simpson Gallery.
HOWARD ARKLEY AND JUAN DAVILA COLLABORATION
UNTIL SEPTEMBER 15
For more than two decades, Howard Arkley and Juan Davila engaged in a collaborative partnership which resulted in the birth of a significant and complex large-scale installation Blue Chip Instant Decorator: A Room, 1990. Although fundamentally different in their ideas, both artists were meticulous in their approach to making art and yet understood the important role that chance, informality and the comedy of misadventure can play in collaboration. Driven by the spirit of surrealism, the work features two painted suburban domestic interiors hung behind constructed furnishings. It references art history, mass media and pop culture. The sofa on fire quotes René Magritte’s surreal painting The Discovery of Fire, 1935, and a real mirror painted with a fake reflection is a direct allusion to the American Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein’s mirror series. Blue Chip Instant Decorator: A Room remains the only manifestation of a remarkable partnership between two of Australia’s most prominent painters. In the Simpson Gallery.
