Victorian Health Minister David Davis yesterday announced Hansen Yuncken as the successful tenderer for the job of building the centre.
The three-level building, funding for which was announced by the then federal Labor minister Simon Crean in May 2011, has been some time coming.
But the Border community will now begin to see the transformation of the existing Albury hospital site as the new centre takes shape between now and its expected completion date in September 2015.
The provision of a wider range of cancer services in Albury-Wodonga should mean patients can seek treatment closer to home and family rather than having to travel to the city.
That is important for anyone facing the task of battling a serious illness.
But the new centre will be about more than just a building that will cater to both public and private patients.
It will fall to governments to ensure there is sufficient operational funding when the time comes to open the doors that will guarantee a level of care to match a state-of-the-art centre.
