A YARRAWONGA milliner and her best friend took out one of the leading prizes with custom-made headwear at yesterday’s Fashions on the Field at Corowa.

Rachael Hart, who has been making hats and headpieces in her home studio for the past seven years, made the winning black sinamay hat with a burnt orange silk abaca trim for friend, Kaye Ferguson of Mulwala.
“I can’t believe it, I’ve never won anything,” said Ms Ferguson, who was at Corowa races for the first time.
“She did a fantastic job.”
It was also the first time Kaye had ever worn a hat.
“I just decided this year I wanted to do something I’ve never done before,” she said.
Ms Hart, who wore a bright orange sinamay headpiece with a silk flower she’d whipped up the night before, said she was thrilled her friend had won.
“I’m proud of her,” she said.
Bec Duryea, of Rutherglen, came first in the Women’s Classic Race Wear category in a dress from Wangaratta designer Annie Mayfield she had bought with vouchers she had won for playing netball.
“I went into Annie Mayfield and thought ‘I’ll have that for the races’,” she said.
Ms Duryea paired the peach floral fitted dress with a white and pink headpiece she had made in New Zealand, a white clutch and white pumps with a ribbon detail.
However, it didn’t take Ms Duryea too long to put together a winning look.
“I’m pretty quick. I got the kids ready, grabbed a bit of make-up and walked out the door,” she said.
Ms Duryea’s father-in-law didn’t share her luck; his two horses came in second and fourth in the races yesterday.
