The Mahatma Gandhi of South Africa, the Abraham Lincoln of the past 80 years.
Finally he has succumbed to the disease he contracted over many years confined to prison for his stance against apartheid.
He has united black Africans and also endeared himself to thousands of whites from scores of freedom-loving countries.
One of his lifelong fights has been against the scourge of HIV Aids.
In 1993 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and in all received more than 250 honours including the US Presidential Medal of peace, the Soviet Order of Lenin and the Bharat Ratna.
One can’t name any other lawyer, civil-rights activist, who despite serving 27 years in prison for sedition, rose to become South Africa’s first black president.
He will be lovingly remembered as “the father of the nation”.
