Police have not released the name of the 42-year-old man.
The truck, towing a Scott’s Transport trailer, veered off a service road alongside the Dukes Highway just after 3am and slammed into Bordertown Small Motors — a former service station site being used as a home and business.
The truck driver was killed instantly and his passenger, a 45-year-old woman from Queensland who police believe was asleep in the cabin, was seriously injured.
The business owner and his wife were sleeping in the bedroom that the truck crashed into.
The man escaped injury but his wife was trapped under falling debris and sustained serious abdominal injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.
Witnesses said the woman was conscious but in shock and suffering severe back pain before she was flown to Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide.
The truck was heading into Bordertown from Adelaide.
