Murray, 16, scraped into the top 32 players for the match play after a one over 73 in the final round of the Victorian Open at Commonwealth yesterday.
Ruffels who finished T24 at the Australian Open behind Rory McIlroy would have gone into the match as favourite following his performance at Royal Sydney.
But playing at his Melbourne home course at Commonwealth, Murray ended the match with three holes to play 4 & 3.
The draw for this afternoon’s round of 16 is yet to be finalised with several morning groups yet to finish.
