Police say the car was stolen in Dandenong following the assault and robbery of a 47-year-old man in a residential care unit about 1am.
Officers tracked the car down near Kilmore and initiated a pursuit after it failed to pull over.
The car continued making its way onto the wrong side of the road to turn onto the Northern Highway, where it was pursued to the Broadford interchange and then onto the Kilmore-Broadford Road before the pursuit was terminated.
‘Stop sticks’ were used some time later to bring the car to a halt on the Old Hume Highway at Winton about 6am.
Three youths - two girls aged 14 and 16, and a boy aged 16 - were arrested at the scene while two other boys, aged 16 and 17, fled into nearby scrubland.
They were pursued by the dog squad and police on foot before being arrested an hour later.
All five are currently assisting police with their enquiries.
