The Border man came to the aid of an elderly woman in North Albury yesterday after an 18-year-old man snatched her handbag in the street.
Mr Kirk saw the bag snatch take place as he spoke with friends nearby.
He chased after the offender on his bike, caught up with him and then challenged him to point out where he had thrown the bag that he had discarded.
Mr Kirk then retrieved the bag, forced the offender back to the victim to apologise before making a citizen’s arrest ahead of police arriving at the scene.
This is a response that deserves a public commendation and should be held up as an example to others.
Most of us like to think that put in the same situation we would, like Mr Kirk, come to the aid of those who fall victim to these kinds of petty criminals.
Hopefully Mr Kirk’s actions encourage us to continue to think that way and assist someone else in the future should it be safe to do so.
Unfortunately issues of safety, legalities and getting involved in other people’s business can discourage us from offering our help.
This is an example of why we need to change that thinking.
