Ms Treffers, who boasts an impressive CV of volunteer work including seven years as a CFA firefighter and fund- raising work with Caritas, Shave for a Cure, the Good Friday Appeal and Relay for Life, was an unanimous choice among those judging the award from a field of more than 20 candidates.
Particularly impressive to the judges, including Wodonga Mayor Cr Rod Wangman, was Ms Treffers’ ability to serve as a role model to her peers and enthuse others in the wider community.
Instead of a well-earned break ahead of her university studies that are due to begin after her return from India, Ms Treffers will teach English in Indian schools.
Her selfless dedication to those who are less fortunate and to serving her own community with the CFA and other council events, mean Ms Treffers has certainly been a worthwhile choice as the city’s leading young citizen, setting an example for others from her generation to follow.
