Wangaratta Leading Sen-Constable Guy Mitchell said police were called by a person travelling behind an erratically-driven Toyota Camry on the Great Alpine Road at Tarrawingee at 6pm on Saturday.
“They’d rung through observations of his speed, which varied from 40km/h to 130km/h,” Sen-Constable Mitchell said.
He said the driver of the Camry pulled over before police arrived. Police then took him back to the Wangaratta police station for further testing.
Sen-Constable Mitchell said the Melbourne man, 38, who had visited someone at Beechworth Correctional Centre, had tested positive for amphetamine.
He said the man was also questioned for a domestic-related incident.
Sen-Constable Mitchell said the father would be summonsed to court at a later date and was banned from driving for 12 hours.
Sen-Constable Mitchell asked anyone who saw the car between Wangaratta and Beechworth on Saturday to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
