A public holiday has also contributed to the growth of Victorian race meetings at Warrnambool, Bendigo, Geelong and Kyneton.
Now Wodonga and District Turf Club looks set to follow in the path of those Victorian regional centres that have traded their Melbourne Cup public holiday for a day off for their local premier race meeting.
The Wodonga Cup day would be switched to a Friday in either late November or early December to allow patrons to take full advantage of the proposed holiday.
But first, the turf club and the Wodonga Chamber of Commerce will survey Wodonga businesses to ask them if they agree with the public holiday switch.
If the consensus is yes, then the next step will be to enlist the support of the Wodonga Council to make a formal application to the Victorian Government for the change.
Club general manager Tom O’Connor said club members would also be consulted on the change and he believed the race industry would also support the proposal should it go ahead.
