While the question of changing the Marriage Act to support same-sex marriage is one raised weekly on the ABC program, Ms Ley said it was a question raised with her only rarely by her constituents.
Ms Ley has since said it was clear attitudes towards homosexuality in Farrer had changed dramatically, although there were still men and women living in country towns who feel harassed by outdated views towards their sexuality.
The convenor of a Border gay and lesbian support service believes Ms Ley’s constituents are ready to talk openly about same-sex marriage and those living on both sides of the Murray should be given the chance to say if they are in favour of changing the Marriage Act.
The Hume Phoenix group will host an Equal Love Rally on Saturday in Albury’s QEII Square, providing Border residents with the opportunity to show their support on same-sex marriage and perhaps giving them the chance to change Ms Ley’s views on the level of interest that exists within her electorate.
