Wangaratta detectives yesterday executed two search warrants, one in Tone Road and the other in Murphy Street, in an effort to recover the baby’s ashes.
Detective Leading Sen-Constable Mark Hussey said the urn had been stolen from the home of the baby’s parents in Thomson Street between last Monday and last Friday.
Police did not know when the baby had died, but it had died of natural causes.
Sen-Constable Hussey said the urn was recovered undamaged during yesterday’s raids at the Murphy Street home.
He said two Wangaratta women were arrested and charged.
One woman, aged 28, was charged with burglary and theft and another woman, 25, was charged with handle stolen goods.
Both were bailed to appear at the Wangaratta Magistrates Court at a later date.
Police will allege the women told them they “didn’t know” why they had taken the ashes.
