TRAIN passengers, already wearied by a long battle to improve V/Line services between Albury and Melbourne, probably shrugged their shoulders and gave a little sigh at news those services would miss out on the provision of free Wi-Fi.

The Victorian government yesterday announced a $40 million program to provide free Wi-Fi on VLocity carriages operating between Melbourne and Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Seymour and Traralgon.
So not only do Border passengers not have access to the improved rolling stock, they don’t get any additional service sweeteners either.
The VLocity trains are some way off coming to the Melbourne-Albury route for several legitimate reasons, including the fact they are now running on broad gauge rather than standard gauge lines.
But given the length of the journeys undertaken by North East and Border passengers and the long-standing issues with the upgrading of the rail corridor, surely it might have been a show of faith to give the region one of the first opportunities to access the Wi-Fi service.
It seems Border patrons are always in a situation of having to “wait their turn”, not only at the end of the line but at the end of the queue.
