Having survived an eagle dropping him from the sky, being kicked by a bull and, most recently, finding himself in a wombat hole, Lucky has shown that, for a third time, his luck is holding.
When Lucky’s owner realised the five-year-old was missing yesterday, he called the SES and the Border Rescue Squad who referred him to plumber Gary Tonkin — he had more suitable equipment to search the hole where the dog was thought to have disappeared.
Owner Leon Martin suspected Lucky had gone down the wombat hole — he had been barking in the area the previous day. His father feared Lucky might have been crushed and killed by a resident wombat.
But Lucky’s time wasn’t up and the kelpie with almost as many lives as a cat emerged from the tunnel after Mr Tonkin lowered his camera and light more than four metres down the hole.
Mr Martin, who said the kelpie is an invaluable working dog on his farm, is grateful to the man he has labelled Lucky’s hero.
As for Lucky, he’s no doubt headed for his next on-farm adventure — hopefully without risking another of those fortuitous lives he has enjoyed.
