The council has spent almost $5000 converting an unloved BMX track at Black Range Park behind Lavington into a 300-metre circuit for junior mountain bikers.

Previously events had been held on a makeshift track carved out of the bush near Kalianna on Gap Road.

Co-organiser Marcus Richardson said the earthworks had created a perfect venue.

“There are a few corners, a few ups and downs,” he said.

“I’ve been out there four or five times since it has been finished and there are always people using it, it’s a hit already.

“Albury City has been very helpful with moving locations.

“With the existing Kalianna kids’ track being outside the club’s licensed operating area, the council had concerns over their insurance, so the kids’ series needed to move.

“Before seeing Black Range I was cautious with my opinion, however having seen what they have done I can’t help be impressed.”

Almost 80 children are registered to race, with the cost just $15 and the Albury-Wodonga Mountain Bike Club subsidising half of the full licence.

Fellow organiser Dylan Clift said the facilities were far better at the new location.

“This site has the advantage of toilets and shower; large flat off-street parking; and even if the kids run off the track there are no large stones to hit, just soft grass to cushion the fall,” he said.
