Last year’s League and Cup champions were coming off a 5-0 thrashing by Boomers.
After going down 1-0 after just five minutes yesterday, Diamonds responded with two of their own before half-time.
Another after the break all but sealed the clash but when a hand ball inside the box handed Melrose a lifeline, Evan Rawluk converting to make it 2-3, it became a frantic last 15 minutes.
Melrose threw everything at Diamonds but left them exposed at the back, a long ball finding Darcy Pawlik to ice the game.
“It was a great way to bounce back,” Diamonds coach Jimmy Bell said.
“There is no secret in the fact that there are a few ex-Diamonds players at Melrose and after the Boomers defeat we sat down and had an honest discussion about what we needed to do.”
