That was how Albury councillor Daryl Betteridge justified the score of four he awarded Border entertainer Steve Bowen at the city’s first Celebrity Dance for Cancer event on Friday night.
About 250 people piled into the Commercial Club to see seven Border identities battle it out on the dance floor.
Cr Betteridge was on the judging panel because of his experience as a ballroom dancer.
“My mother said I couldn’t go to soccer training unless I took my sister to dancing,” he said.
“I’ve also been to many eisteddfods so I know what it takes.”
Albury-Wodonga Dance Centre teacher Bronwyn Robertson and First National Bonnici and Associates Real Estate director William Bonnici won first place for their World War I-themed effort.
“I am surprised and just stoked,” Mr Bonnici said.
“It wasn’t easy — you only see success before work in a dictionary.”
Although Mr Bowen received the lowest score, he raised more than $4000 for cancer research.
The event raised about $30,000 and organiser Annabel Macdonald said the event would be held again next year.
“It’s gone really well for the first event,” she said.
The money raised will go towards Cancer Council NSW campaigns, including the EatIt2BeatIt program, soon to be launched on the Border.
It will also help maintain existing services.
