The Redlegs now have to beat Swanpool in their final home-and-away fixture to secure the double chance and their performance at the weekend has given them plenty of enthusiasm, according to coach Andrew Burke.
He said that he was pleased with the character his men showed in the last quarter to fight out the victory after the Swans closed to within one point.
“It was one of those wins you love to have before the finals,” Burke said.
“When the going gets tough, the tough get going, and we certainly did that against Swanpool.
“I think our work-rate was right up there and the boys really had a will to win.
“Second spot has always been in our sights, and we’re on track now if we win our last game.”
Jason Webb was best on ground for the Redlegs with a dominant display in the ruck, while spearhead Drew Bowman finished with five goals and was also fantastic.
“He didn’t drop a mark all day and did everything you could ask of a full forward,” Burke said.
“Jason didn’t lose a tap all day so they were two standouts for sure.”
Bonnie Doon booted a mammoth 42.23 (275) on Saturday over Devenish to win by a whopping 265 points.
Assistant coach Heath Martin made full use of some silver service from further afield to boot 15 goals, while Jarrod Demarco, Tim Scott and Tim Walsh also had days to remember.
Scott, too, cashed in around the goals to finish with seven majors while David Hamilton slotted home five.
In the other match a strong Goorambat outfit disposed of Swanpool by 152 points.
