A cold snap has delivered at least 20cm of fresh powder at Falls Creek and Mount Hotham, with snow falling down to 500m including at Tawonga Gap and Ballarat.
Bureay of Meteorology forecaster Andrea Peace said the mountains were expected to get a total of 30cm by tonight and another cold front was due to move through on the weekend.
"We're expecting another cold front to come through on Friday and into Saturday which should deliver another 20cm," she said.
"So by the time Sunday comes we should have half-a-metre of fresh snow for the week."
Falls Creek Resort marketing manager Jo Prothero said ski patrols had recorded at least 16cm on top of a 100cm base.
Considering this week was one of the only times of the year that school holidays lined up in all states, the falls had come at the perfect time.
"We're super excited about this storm front," she said.
"Conditions have already been the best in a decade for the school holidays and this is just the icing on the cake."
Falls Creek Hotel co-owner Glenn Docking said it had been "blowing a gale all morning but now, it's coming down almost verticle."
"I'm just standing here with a Peroni (beer) off the tap, watching it all come down," he said.
"It's a fantastic view."
