WANGARATTA ART GALLERY
ARTEFACT AND IDENTITY
JULY 25 TO AUGUST 25
Jan Donaldson’s new exhibition investigates relationships between objects and identity, focusing on the doll. The doll as not just a plaything, but as an object intimately linked to identity; projections of human character through cues that suggest aspects of emotions, personalities and characteristics. The use of dolls and puppets in cultural contexts are used to convey ideas, customs and life-styles relevant to their particular cultures, while maintaining and enriching a sense of identity. The exhibition references historical dolls, their use and significance and the use of the doll motif in contemporary art. Entry: gold coin.
PETITE: MINIATURE TEXTILES
UNTIL JULY 27
PETITE: Miniature Textiles is a biennial exhibition held by the Wangaratta Art Gallery that is growing in stature and prestige. From over 200 entries, 116 works by 97 artists from across the country have been selected for this fourth PETITE exhibition, which showcases the diversity of approach in textile artistry. Tapestry weaving, lace, sculpture, applique, assemblage, embroidery, felting, basketry and dyeing. These techniques are used to create works that are not only decorative but often tackle deep and meaningful themes and concepts. The only stipulation for entrants is size which is limited to a maximum 30cm in any direction. The beauty of the landscape and the fragile nature of our environment provide inspiration for many of the artists such as June Brown with her textile book Why I Love Eucalypt Trees, Deborah McArdle’s sculptural work Marking Winter and Julie Paul’s woven tapestry Costal Weavings Series. The fragility of human life and remembrance has been explored in a very poignant work by John Parkes: Sample (dead two years now) a work using cotton cloth from his late father’s shirt and shorts. For more information phone (03) 5722 0761.

DAYDREAMS BY THE RIVER
UNTIL JULY 30
This body of work comprising 10 lakescapes and 10 contemporary textile pieces is based on a reflection of two years studying textiles in South Australia under teachers Julia Morris, Suzzane Gummow and Cathy Boniciolli and workshops with textile tutors Jane Callender and Carol Wilkes. The lakescapes are interpretations of Ricci Simone’s photographs of Lake Mulwala and the Murray River. Sunsets over the lake are calming and inspiring. These 10 lakescapes are painted on hand-dyed raw silk and embellished with hand stitch beading and applique. The 10 contemporary works show a vast repertoire of textile techniques such as printing, hand stitch, foiling, machine embroidery, applique and multiple layering techniques. Free entry. Open 5.30pm to 7.30pm. The Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre is at 100 Murphy Street, Wangaratta.

ABSTRACT
UNTIL OCTOBER 26
Abstract brings together the work of six Australian artists: Sydney Ball, Dale Frank, Marc Freeman, Camille Hannah, Kirra Jamison and NoEl Skrzypczak. MIGRANT ARTISTS TO AUSTRALIA
UNTIL SEPTEMBER 28
Australia was a destination for settlement in the early 1800s and migration continues to this day. The artists who came to this continent have contributed in many ways to the education and development of the diverse cultural styles of Australian visual arts. This exhibition is a selection of artworks by migrant artists in the Benalla Art Gallery collection from the early colonial period through to the present day. The sample of images reflects the changes that have influenced Australian art over the past two centuries.
NEW ORDER
UNTIL AUGUST 24
Louise Paramor is one of Australia’s most well recognised and celebrated sculptors and is widely known for her creative vision for residual and ephemeral materials. She was recipient of the prestigious McClelland Sculpture and Survey Award in 2010 and in 2012 her monumental sculpture ‘Panorama Station’ was commissioned for the Peninsula Link Freeway. Paramor works with found objects and plastics that are especially tactile and often striking in colour — characteristics that, not surprisingly, evoke an irresistible sense of whimsy and play. This exhibition showcases a selection of consumer-based plastic sculptural works, collage and abstract paintings on glass that challenge traditional readings of contemporary detritus in a fun and lurid way. There is also a serious side to Paramor’s practice and the significance and indeed resonance of her artwork can be found within religion, architecture, modern day urban life and today’s heavily consumerist culture. “I really enjoy experimenting with colour and abstraction ... and inspired by the very substance of paint itself … I have become more interested in the principles of modernist abstract sculpture and painting, and the cliches thereof, which in turn, informs my approach to the genre,” Paramore says.

At first, Betro relied on Melbourne manufacturers and wholesalers but eventually began importing and supplying goods himself. Goods on offer included girdles, stockings, clothing, household supplies, beauty supplies, toiletry supplies, sewing supplies (haberdashery), shoes, hats and much more.

JINDERA PIONEER MUSEUM
JINDERA HISTORY
OPEN OCTOBER TO APRIL
The first German settlers arrived in the Jindera area in 1867, having trekked from Adelaide in horse drawn wagons. Before they arrived, probably in the 1840s, a small wattle and daub hut was built just off the main track through town. This hut still stands at the site of the Jindera Pioneer Museum, and probably is the oldest remaining cottage or house in the Albury District. In 1874 Mr Johann Rosler and Mr Peter Wagner built a store and three room residence on this same sight. It became known as Wagner’s Store. Formed in 1967, the Jindera Pioneer and Historical Society purchased Wagner’s Store, the residence, and the grounds around the wattle and daub hut, and restored them to their original condition. It IS filled will all kinds of articles —furniture, household goods and machinery, gathered into an original and historic setting of old world architecture and charm. Wander through the fully furnished general store and residence and down to the Pioneer Slab Hut and the original wattle and daub cottage, and then on to the huge machinery shed with its large collection of farm machinery and equipment. The museum is in Urana Street, Jindera. For more information go to jinderapioneermuseum.org.au. Open daily, 10am to 4pm, October to April.

OPEN VARIOUS TIMES (SEE BELOW)
The museum is housed in the Bank of Victoria building, 21 High Street, Yackandandah. Building began in 1860. The cottage at the rear was an original street building of the 1850s. Specific requests must be made by appointment to allow for retrieval or collation of material. CHILTERN ATHENAEUM MUSEUM
CHILTERN HISTORY

There’s also a display of memorabilia relating to Chiltern-born Sir John “Black Jack” McEwen, who became Prime Minister after the disappearance of Harold Holt and a series of paintings by Alfred William Eustace, a self-taught artist and poet, who came to this area in 1852 and was employed as a shepherd on the Eldorado Run. A First World War honour roll is a dominating feature of the Chiltern Athenaeum and forms the central point of an ongoing collection of photographs, profiles, medals, certificates and other memorabilia relating to Chiltern and district people who served in both World Wars. The Museum also houses photographic displays and an outdoor exhibition featuring our mining and agricultural past and long with microfilm of the local newspaper The Federal Standard (1859-1970), an extensive collection of local family histories and community records enable the volunteers to carry out family and historic research.
