It happens all the time. I find mail from regional areas to capital cities is much slower than mail from capitals to regional areas.
But I suspect the main reason for slower mail services is the fact Australia Post has a policy where its drivers can only drive a certain number of hours during the day, including truck drivers.
And with the likelihood of a three-day mail service, it could easily take weeks to be delivered.
When parcels arrive from overseas, they are usually transported via private courier then straight to the post office.
