Small Business Minister Russell Northe yesterday confirmed the gazettal of the first alternative public holiday arrangement for the city in lieu of the state’s Melbourne Cup holiday would be made official next week.
Mr Northe said the public holiday would allow Wodonga residents to enjoy their local race meeting and ultimately showcase the city at an event that shows the promise of future growth.
It now falls to the turf club to promote the November 28 event this year and to take full advantage of the opportunity to double its 2013 cup day crowd of 2500 people.
Certainly the provision of a public holiday will encourage people to attend the cup on their day off, just as the half-day holiday in Albury has assisted in building crowds at the city’s March gold cup event.
The three-year deal will allow the Wodonga club to test the waters in building its event and hopefully it will have the evidence for the public holiday to be a long-term arrangement for the city.
