The problem has been confirmed by V/Line on the east track between Avenel and Violet Town.
The rough ride is also believed to have resulted in the closure of the train’s buffet car on the same stretch.
Several conductors are believed to have been injured as a result of carriages “jumping” on the track.
Up to four have reportedly been hurt, including one with a knee injury, although this number is yet to be confirmed.
V/Line yesterday laid the blame for the rough track on recent wet weather.
A spokeswoman said rain had caused mudholes to appear along the track between Avenel and Violet Town.
“A speed restriction was put in place and the Australian Rail Track Corporation carried out repairs on Tuesday,” she said.
She said the work involved spot tamping, track compacting and resurfacing, as well as some ballast repairs.
She said the repair work was now complete.
“But V/Line trains will run a slower speed of 80km/h for a few more days while works bed down,” she said.
A spokesman for the Rail, Tram and Bus Union’s Victorian branch said they had heard reports from its members about conductors having to sit down as the train travelled the rough stretch.
The union was unable to provide any more details.
V/Line said conductors were always advised to put the safety of customers and the organisation’s own staff first.
“If the train journey does feel rough, food and drink handling should be dropped,” the spokeswoman said.
“We have had some reported injuries, which are being addressed.”
V/Line said the speed restrictions should affect travel times by only a few minutes.
This week’s repairs are not the last for the Avenel to Violet Town stretch of track.
The ARTC has planned drainage works “and some targeted track undercutting” for the area towards the end of the year.
V/Line said this would help with the continued improvement of the track’s condition.
