Police said the man, 47, was intercepted by police while driving a Range Rover about 9pm.
He was taken to the police station for a breath test and returned a high-range reading of more than 0.15.
Leading Sen-Constable Anthony Short said motorists should be aware police were actively patrolling the area.
“If you drink-drive at Mount Hotham there’s a fairly good chance of getting caught,” he said.
“There’s obviously an increased element of danger driving in alpine conditions.
“Conditions were foggy and the visibility was low.”
Sen-Constable Short said the driver also endangered others travelling on the road.
The driver received a fine and his licence was immediately suspended.
