After one of its best snow seasons in years, the news just got better for Falls Creek yesterday.
The Victorian government announced $2.5 million to build an athlete accommodation centre at the ski hub.
The 40-bed centre at Howmans Gap Alpine Centre will support disabled athletes who have a case when they argue they are short-changed when it comes to such contributions compared to the backing provided to able-bodied athletes.
The funding comes from the government’s strategic sporting infrastructure program and is not contingent on the Coalition winning government at the November election.
The Sports Minister, Damian Drum, said the investment would encourage a new generation of Paralympic heroes.
Still, there will be those who argue the funding could be better spent on other things — as seems to be the case with any such windfall.
But this will be a much-appreciated centre for those disabled athletes who could well argue they deserve it.
If it gives disabled athletes a chance to develop their full potential, it has to be a good thing, and no doubt will generate benefits far beyond Falls Creek.
