I APPLAUD the decision by Scott Morrison MP to allow our asylum seekers to enter Australia and give them temporary protection visas instead of keeping them off-shore and at risk of abuse and neglect.

Temporary protection visas are not a solution, but at least these desperate people will have human contact and support and families can stay together.
People who have been damaged by all the trauma they have experienced, particularly vulnerable children, are at risk of becoming a future liability if they fall into neglect and depression.
That is why, in a rich country such as ours, we need to fully support them and fully integrate them.
The federal government could offer incentives to communities who mentor such families, including job traineeships, language courses and education for the mothers and children.
Furthermore, communities like Shepparton have shown themselves to be surprisingly supportive.
It will certainly be cheaper and more pleasant in the long run, than filling mental hospitals and prisons and setting up security systems.
The main thing is to make our newcomers feel accepted.
