BRENDAN Fevola has turned up the heat on Albury after the Pigeons inflicted more finals pain on Lavington with a heart-stopping one-point win in yesterday’s preliminary final.
The Yarrawonga star, who kicked his 100th goal for the season and the match-winning point in yesterday’s thriller, said the Tigers would undoubtedly go into Sunday’s grand final at Lavington as raging hot favourites to win the premiership.
Yarrawonga booked a sixth straight decider between the Tigers and Pigeons with yesterday’s victory in what was yet another disastrous result for the Panthers in a cut-throat final.
Lavington was 35 points clear almost 10 minutes into the third quarter of yesterday’s contest.
The Panthers have had their past four seasons ended in knockout finals by a combined margin of just nine points.
Three of those defeats have come in preliminary finals.
Fevola said all the pressure would be on the Tigers this week.
“They’ll go in raging favourites,” he said.
“Nobody will give us much chance but we like that.
“But once you’re in — it’s 50-50.
“It’s pretty hard to win it, if you’re not in it.
“Anyone can win.
“We’ll change a few things up and when you get to the big dance it’s anyone’s game.
“We’ll rest up this week and have a good week on the track.
“It’s round six — let’s make it three-all.”
Fevola, who is still no certainty to be at Yarrawonga again next season, was beaming with pride after the victory.
He played a starring role with six goals to get the Pigeons over the line.
“The boys are just warriors,” he said.
“I couldn’t play with better blokes.
“We knew at half-time we could still win.
“I’ve got the best teammates.”
In a further boost to Yarrawonga’s chances of causing an upset this week, the Pigeons got through yesterday’s clash unscathed.
The club will shoot for a hat-trick of premierships for the first time in what will be Chris Kennedy’s last game as co-coach.
