The car was advertised for sale at a vacant lot on the corner of East Street and Schubach Street, where it was left overnight.
Police are uncertain of the circumstances surrounding the blaze, which broke out about 10.45pm.
Acting Inspector Daniel Finch said car fires had the potential to spread and cause wider damage and were not something they saw often.
“Things are starting to dry out at this time of year and a fire of that nature can pose a serious risk,” he said.
It took 15 minutes for Albury fire crews to extinguish the flames.
The owner has been notified and investigations are continuing.
