THE owl sculpture outside the Lavington Library is, and will long be, a valuable addition to the area — an eye-catching art work and an appropriate figure symbolising books, learning and wisdom.

The education aspect of the image is also evident because the bird’s top-knot looks rather like a university graduate cap.
I never like the term “book worm” applied to people who love reading — I think “book owl” is a far better description and a greater encouragement for children to become interested in the wonderful world of books.
It is a perfect idea for a campaign for school kids to come up with a suitable name for the library owl.
The owl would make a great logo for Lavington.
It would be a good thing if the sculptor of the owl (Dean Bowen) was given a commission by the Albury Council to create an art piece for QEII Square .
Perhaps a sculpture setting for explorers Hume and Hovell, Hamilton Hume, or Albury’s very first businessman Robert Brown would be an important addition.
I also think a sculpture of three-time mayor of Albury, Cleaver Bunton, would make a really great enhancement for our city square and a worthy tribute marker for his periods in office.
