ISLAMIC State does not speak for Albury-Wodonga Muslims or act on their behalf.
That’s the message from members of the Islamic Society of Albury- Wodonga.
Speaking after yesterday’s prayers, which were attended by about 100 people, society president Yakub Mohammed said he believed people were stirring unrest.
But he said local followers of Islam were completely separate to the group and in no way supported its aims.
“Islam is not about killing innocents,” he said.
“It’s about inviting innocents, we invite them in and they are part of our families.
“Islam is not violence, it is peace.”
Shihab Munir said people could not be judged by the actions of Islamic State.
“Not everyone is the same,” he said.
“There are good humans and bad humans everywhere.
“You can’t put a label on people due to their culture, race or religion.”
Gani Abdul, at age 72, said he had never had any problems in his 42 years on the Border.
“I mix with people from all the communities for work and through sport,” he said.
Mr Mohammed said local Muslims most commonly had heritage from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.
