Rex is fondly remembered by many ex-cubs and their families as a leader who provided a wide range of training and fun-filled experiences for the members of his cub pack.
In his role as a leader of the cubs, Rex took the name of Akela.
Cubs aged 8-10 years gain grounding in all the basic skills of scouting, such as bushcraft, first aid, conservation and knotting.
With the assistance of other leaders, Rex was able to instil in his charges invaluable learning and training.
His dedication ensured he was successful in providing enjoyable times for those in his group.
Rex was also the key organiser and guiding hand for many pack holidays.
Those weekend camp-outs were held at many North East Victorian venues and provided lots of great scouting activities.
Rex served as a cub and scout leader at Rutherglen from November 1975 until March 1996.
He was awarded the Medal of Merit in 1990 and recognised for 20 years’ service in 1996.
The founder of the worldwide scouting movement, Lord Baden Powell, in his last message, wrote: “The real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people. Try to leave this world a little better than you found it so that you can die happy in feeling that you have not wasted your time but have done your best.”
Rex Fuge fulfilled those ideals.
