The Cancer Albury Wodonga website, which was officially launched yesterday, links people with services and support organisations and provides information on the disease.

Albury-Wodonga Cancer Foundation chairman Eric Turner said about 1400 people in the region were diagnosed with cancer each year, which is due to grow by 15 per cent each year.

“That’s a scary proposition,” he said.

“Every diagnosis poses some questions.

“We’ve tried to put those answers in a central place and make it as easy as possible for someone to access that information.

“The success of the website would only be as good as the information that is provided on it.”

It took about six months to create the website as all information was scrutinised, cross referenced and validated.

The site came online on Monday night and was officially opened at the Albury-Wodonga Cancer Foundation annual general meeting yesterday.

Mr Turner said the major issue the group would address in the next 12 months was transporting cancer patients to treatment.

He said cross-border issues and the cost of transport both needed to be looked at.

“There is a limited amount of transport here,” Mr Turner said.

“We’ve got people who live in Albury and need to be treated in Wodonga and vice versa.

“We want to address the issue and find out where the flaws are and see what we can do to be of assistance.

“Having the bit of water between the two cities is a big problem.”

Mr Turner said many people receiving treatment could not afford to take taxis to consultations.

“There is some financial assistance, but it’s minimal compared to what the costs are,” he said.

“Community transport is so heavily in demand that sometimes you have to book seven days in advance.”
