The Albury resident is a finalist in the 2014 Green Globe Awards to be held at NSW Parliament House on October 30.

The awards, sponsored by the NSW government, recognise businesses, government, community organisations and individuals who have integrated environmental practices into their day-to-day operations.

“It’s such a surprise to be named a finalist,” Ms Retra said.

“I’m up against some big-name companies and organisations, but it shows you don’t have to be in a paid role to make a difference.

“I see it as a huge thumbs up to all the volunteers and local projects in our area that help encourage sustainable living.”

Ms Retra shares her passion for growing food and attracting native bees to her bee hotels on her website and through community meetings.

“I am really interested in food production and growing my own food in my garden,” she said.

In the search for native bees, her Albury garden has been turned into a beacon for bees, which she catalogues and photographs regularly.

Ms Retra is also part of the Seed Savers Albury-Wodonga. Seed Savers member Lizette Salmon made the nomination.

“Karen has inspired thousands of people to tread more lightly on the planet,” she said.
