FASCINATORS, fashion and fund-raising meant the ladies at Albury Oaks Day hardly noticed the horse races were almost called off yesterday.
A burst water pipe at the 600-metre mark of the track meant races were delayed and didn’t start until 3.30pm.
But with so much colour and creativity, Bubbly Charity marquee organiser and Mature Lady of the Day winner Susan White said she was more focused on the luncheon.
“The race being delayed hasn’t impacted us, we are going great,” she said.
“This is our sixth year having this luncheon and we’ve had 250 women show up.
“This year we are hoping to raise $12,000 to help out the family of Kellie Wall, who passed away three months ago.
“For me the whole idea is about helping out the community and this is what country racing is all about, so it also adds to have won fashions on the field wearing an outfit which was locally bought too.”
Underpinning the day was the fashion, with Fashions on the Field judge Alex Pike saying it had stepped up from last year.
“I think there would be a good 60 per cent that could now go to Flemington and give the city ladies a run for their money,” she said.
Lady of the Day went to Bianca Howard from Albury, who said she wanted to try something different with her choice of race wear.
“I wanted to have a bit of fun so I thought I would go with the jump-suit because I know it’s left from centre,” she said.
Judge Paul Guilmartin said the risk had paid off.
“It was a very relaxed feel which really suited country racing and was very on trend,” he said.
“Which really goes to show our fashion is alive and well in Albury-Wodonga.”
Millinery of the day went to Elizabeth Paterson who not only wore the winning headpiece, but made it herself.
“It took me about six hours to make my headpiece,” she said.
“A friend of mine designed my jewellery, which is made from clay and she made some extra beads for the hat.
“Whenever I make a headpiece I always try to make it a 3D effect, so every angle that you look at it is perfect, you have to pay attention to detail.”
