What better way to test the Albury-Wodonga's pulse over more than a century than to survey the concerns of its citizens through their letters to Border newspapers.

That idea of HotHouse Theatre artistic director Jon Halpin (pictured below) is the foundation for the ambitious new production Letters from the Border from the young actors of HotHouse's Studio Ensemble.

"I thought, 'Letters to the editor is something that's been going for 100 years here and it's a way to capture the mood of at least a segment of the community'," Halpin says.

Letters from the Border runs from November 14 to 29 at The Butter Factory Theatre, Wodonga.

RED CROSS: 100 YEARS (UNTIL MAY 31, 2015): Part of the world’s largest humanitarian movement, Red Cross has been woven into the fabric of Australian life for 100 years, responding to natural disasters, providing a blood service and everyday work to help vulnerable people. BONEGILLA MIGRANT EXPERIENCE, BONEGILLA

MULTICULTURAL HISTORY (OPEN DAILY): With National Heritage listing, Block 19 Bonegilla has become part of the narrative of nation. Twelve kilometres from Wodonga on Lake Hume, Block 19 was one of 24 similar blocks built in the Bonegilla complex as an army camp during World War II. It became the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training centre in 1947, and housed migrants until 1971. Learn about the early gold mining days, mountain cattlemen, ski pioneers, St Bernard’s Hospice, the building of the Hotham Road constructed completely using hand tools in the 1860s as well as the wonderful array of colourful characters who have played a part in Harrietville and district’s past. BRIGHT MUSEUM

HISTORICAL BRIGHT (OPEN VARIOUS TIMES AND BY APPOINTMENT): The Bright and District Historical Society’s heritage-listed former Bright Railway Station, now the Bright Museum, features rolling stock typical of that used on the old Ovens Valley Railway. The museum covers railway history, gold mining history and also the social history of the area with local family histories and a photographic collection plus there is a reconstructed Chinese Joss House. Open 2pm to 4pm Sundays except mid-June to early September. During the summer, Easter and September school holidays and festivals the museum is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday afternoons. MYRTLEFORD OLD SCHOOL MUSEUM

MYRTLEFORD’S PAST (OPEN SUNDAYS MAY TO SEPTEMBER OR BY APPOINTMENT): Displays include old school room, 1930's kitchen and living room, gold mining equipment, barber shop and tobacconist cabinets, newspaper printing machinery, horse-drawn agricultural machinery, farming equipment, bottle collection, military photographs and memorabilia, and sporting trophies. BURKE MUSEUM, BEECHWORTH

BEECHWORTH HISTORY (OPEN DAILY*): One of Australia’s oldest museums and is considered a “Museum of Museums” with its significant collections from the 1800s and contemporary internally produced and touring exhibitions, highlights include RE Johns Aboriginal, Chinese and Natural History collections, The Ned Kelly Story including the Burke Museum Ned Kelly Collection plus The Street of Shops, a 19th century recreation of a Beechworth streetscape. *Open 10am to 5pm (last entry 4.30pm) daily except on Christmas Day. STANLEY ATHENAEUM, STANLEY

STANLEY NEW YEAR’S DAY SPORTS EXHIBITION (UNTIL JANUARY 31): See photos from the Beechworth Family Albums depicting the Stanley New Year’s Day Sports in the Stanley Athenaeum. The Stanley Athenaeum and Library is an historic brick building comprising a Main Hall and Back Room, erected in 1874. Stanley is a 15-minute drive from Beechworth. ELDORADO MUSEUM

TIMES PAST (PHONE FOR OPENING HOURS): The Eldorado Museum holds a collection that reflects the life and times of the region from 1850 to 1950. The displays cover mining, farming and social history of Eldorado and surrounds and is housed in the old school building as well as in outside displays. The museum is at 136 Main Street, Eldorado. WANGARATTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM

WANGARATTA AND NORTH EAST HISTORIC COLLECTION (OPEN SUNDAYS, TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS): This Wangaratta Historical Society museum is housed in the former Wangaratta Fire Station building in Ford Street. The collection features smaller items of historical significance — household, commercial, industrial, agricultural, military and more — from the Wangaratta district, a collection of about 10,000 historic and recent photographs plus a collection of more than 3000 glass plate negatives. Open: 2pm to 5pm on Sundays and 9am to noon on Tuesdays and Fridays.

BLACKSMITH SHOP AND MUSEUM, GLENROWAN

FARM MACHINERY FROM THE PAST (OPEN DAILY): An authentic operating blacksmith shop featuring Kelly Gang souvenirs and practical items. The museum’s focus is farm machinery from the past that has been gathered locally. The museum and shop is in Seige Street, Glenrowan.

GLENROWAN COBB & CO MUSEUM, GLENROWAN

TRANSPORT AND KELLY HISTORY (OPEN DAILY): Explore the large underground cellar museum specialising in the story of the Kelly outbreak and other notorious Australian bushrangers. Open daily from 9am to 5.30pm. The museum is in Gladstone Street, Glenrowan. Information: phone (03) 5766 2409.

BENALLA AVIATION MUSEUM

MILITARY AIR TRAINING HISTORY (OPEN WEDNESDAYS AND SUNDAYS): The Benalla Aviation Museum offers a fascinating look at Australia’s military air training history, at the historic home of a World War II RAAF pilot training school. Attractions include a unique collection of military training aircraft, a number of which are fully operational and available for passenger flights, and many related static displays. BENALLA COSTUME AND PIONEER MUSEUM

MANSFIELD HISTORICAL SOCIETY

MANSFIELD'S YESTERYEAR (OPEN FRIDAY TO SUNDAY AND MOST PUBLIC HOLIDAYS OR BY APPOINTMENT): Mansfield Historical Society is located at the Mansfield Railway Station and features a wealth of information about the history of Mansfield and the surrounding district including genealogical information, microfiche documents, photos, memorabilia, maps and an extensive clothing collection. RUTHERGLEN COMMON SCHOOL MUSEUM

EDUCATIONAL HISTORY (OPEN SUNDAYS OR BY APPOINTMENT): The Rutherglen Historical Society Old Common School Museum contains an early 20th century school room including old desks, artefacts, and teaching aids and there is a growing collection of school class photos. FEDERATION MUSEUM, COROWA

THE BIRTHPLACE OF FEDERATION (OPEN SATURDAY AND SUNDAY OR BY APPOINTMENT): Displays on Corowa’s role in Federation, Aboriginal artefacts including Tommy MacRae sketches, agricultural implements manufactured locally, horse-drawn vehicles and saddlery, 1900s lifestyle displays, Tom Roberts’ Shearing the Rams display and more. MAX’S MOTOR MUSEUM, COROWA

AUTOMOTIVE HEAVEN (OPEN SATURDAY TO MONDAY OR BY APPOINTMENT TUESDAY TO FRIDAY): See vintage to modern cars and motors from all ages including oil engines and a free-standing V-12 motor. Max Maclean’s private collection is a must-see and includes cars belonging to local enthusiasts who house their cars at the museum, corner Hammersley and Norseman roads, Corowa. YARRAWONGA MULWALA PIONEER MUSEUM

PIONEERING AUSTRALIA (OPENING HOURS BELOW): See one of the largest and most comprehensive exhibits of the early pioneering days of Australia. Housed in a spacious and modern facility, exhibits include sport and leisure, early aviation, vintage cars, dental surgery, community quilt, blacksmith’s shop and much more. BERRIGAN AND DISTRICT HERITAGE MUSEUM

BERRIGAN’S PAST (OPEN WEDNESDAY MORNINGS): The Museum features collections of a number of oral histories, Federation information, fire brigade memorabilia and material relating to the Berrigan RSL Club, including guns, medals uniforms and service records of Berrigan men and women who served in World War I and World War II. Open 9am to 11am Wednesdays.

FINLEY HISTORICAL MUSEUM AND LOG CABIN

FINLEY DISTRICT HISTORY (OPEN MOST DAYS OR BY APPOINTMENT): The Finley Historical Museum and Log Cabin showcases the heritage of the Finley District and provides the opportunity to step back in time and view those items that supported the lives of our pioneering rural families. CHRYSTIE’S MUSEUM, TOCUMWAL

TOCUMWAL’S YESTERYEAR (OPEN DAILY): Turn back the clock to the era of the classic cars, trucks, caravans, tractors and a host of other memorabilia and collectables. Highlights include working vintage cars, an old logging truck and one-of-a-kind tractors — something for everyone. Open 10am to 4pm daily. The museum is at 139 Thorburns Road, Tocumwal. FINLEY RAILWAY MUSEUM

RAILWAY HISTORY: The well preserved Finley Station is one of the few Pioneer stations still standing, and is also host to the Finley Pioneer Railway Museum containing artefacts and real life railway stories. Take a guided tour with a volunteer and learn about the history of the Finley Pioneer Railway Station or simply have a look around at the on-site railway memorabilia dating back to the 1890s.

ADJACENT TO THE LIBRARY IN THE OLD PRINTERY, JERILDERIE

CONVICTS AND BUSHRANGER and DOING THE BOLT EXHIBITIONS (OPEN BY APPOINTMENT): There is an extensive collection of exact replicas and originals including 30 storyboards and banners detailing the life of bushrangers and convicts, pistols and guns flag flown at Eureka Rebellion, Cat o’ nine tails and whipping post, shackles and locks and much more. The exhibition is housed adjacent to the Library in the Old Printery building, the historic printing office of the Jerilderie and Urana Gazette where Ned Kelly attempted to have his manifesto, The Jerilderie Letter, printed.
