TWU national secretary Tony Sheldon was in Wagga for the signing of the agreement yesterday, and hailed it a “win for all sides”.
“It’s a union agreement everyone can be proud of,” he said.
Key components of the agreement, which covers more than 500 drivers in Australia’s eastern states, include a wage increase of 14 per cent over four years, superannuation boosts that will see it reach 13 per cent by the end of the agreement and loyalty bonuses for drivers who give more than two years of service.
Mr Sheldon said it would bring about a happier and safer work environment for the drivers.
“It gives a fair return to drivers, so they can have peace of mind out on the road that the family’s getting financial support,” he said.
Ron Finemore, the chairman of the transport company bearing his name, said the new agreement had reached a fair arrangement for all parties involved in the negotiations.
“If the people aren’t happy, they’re not going to deliver safety, reliability and efficiency to us and our customers,” he said.
Mr Finemore said ensuring safety and reliability were the main key points driving negotiations for the agreement.
