The Conargo Pub was destroyed by fire on Tuesday night and with the flames went part of the region’s history.
For the locals, the pub was the centre of the community, together with the nearby general store.
For the visitors, Conargo was a must-stop on the map; the place where you collected one of the famous stickers and took the time for a look at some of the memorabilia that lined the pub’s walls.
It might have been a photograph of a prize-winning ram from one of the famous sheep studs nearby or a story that told of the region’s past.
Those headed to, or home from, the annual Deniliquin Ute Muster often made a stop at Conargo, camping nearby and enjoying a night out at the pub.
The aforementioned stickers found their way to vehicles all over Australia and overseas.
The loss of the pub and its memorabilia is likely to affect the community for some time.
But the good news is licensee Anthony Surace wants to rebuild the hotel.
No doubt there will be plenty of support from locals and visitors alike on the day the doors reopen.
