RoadSafe North East has reported a number of crashes and falls where cyclists riding in packs or groups have been hurt after colliding with each other.
One of them, Benalla rider Ross Wood, spent 22 days in hospital after falling from his bike when he clipped another rider.
In the same incident, another rider following Mr Wood, who had been unable to brake in time, was also injured when he hit him and a bike wheel.
The campaign is not about discouraging people from “bunch riding”, as it is termed; but it is about introducing a code of conduct or behaviour for those who choose to ride in this fashion.
It is also about reinforcing the necessity for riders to invest in, and use, the correct safety equipment such as helmets and protective clothing.
Cycling is one of the most rapidly growing sports and pastimes in this country, both among local riders and those who visit for many events held in the Border and North East.
It is therefore appropriate this campaign is promoted in tourism information centres, local cafes and bike shops.
