The award — named in honour of the late The Border Mail editor — aims to give up-and-coming journalists a kickstart in the industry.
Mr Carmody, 21, received $3000 as part of the scholarship and will undertake work experience with the newspaper.
“It’s a wonderful honour to be awarded this scholarship in Cameron’s name,” he said.
“I can’t think of a better way of being able to honour his memory than by celebrating his craft and by supporting a local journalism student.
“I’m looking forward to full-time work and cutting my teeth in the industry.
“I want to get out there.
“University is hard work, but now the hard work begins in the industry.”
The Border Mail editor Di Thomas said she had been impressed by the skills of the young RMIT graduate, who grew up in Wodonga.
“This is a young man who knows where he is going and I am thrilled we have been able to help him in some way in getting there,” she said.
“He is well and truly practising his craft with the kind of commitment and passion we seek to promote in awarding this scholarship in Cameron’s memory.”
An annual golf day supporting the scholarship will be held today at Wodonga Golf Course.
