Mr Cameron, a vocal supporter of the anti-abortion group’s right to protest outside the clinic, called a media conference yesterday to dispute claims from the Rights To Privacy group the clinic was the only facility in Albury where abortions could occur.
He said talks with Albury Wodonga Health chief executive Sue O’Neill left him with the impression abortions could be performed at a public hospital.
“There have been many claims made about this clinic by the Rights To Privacy group,” Mr Cameron said.
“If a woman is faced with a choice of going to the Albury Wodonga Health service and arranging a medical abortion on the public health system for no money or faced with the choice of paying $400 at this place, which is the obvious choice to make?
“I know what I would like any member of my family or friends to choose.
“The question then lies open ‘what is the need for this clinic?’”
Dr Mourik, a spokesman for the Rights To Privacy group, said Mr Cameron was misinformed.
“For Darren Cameron to say terminations are done at Wodonga hospital is a ridiculous and uninformed comment,” he said.
“He is simply wrong.
“You don’t do them in the wards because they are all done in Albury in Englehardt Street.
“He is not a doctor and it is a ridiculous statement.”
Dr Mourik said Mr Cameron’s misunderstanding could stem from late or early pregnancy procedures in the public health arena.
Albury Wodonga Health issued a statement late yesterday following the latest public spat between Mr Cameron and Dr Mourik.
“AWH undertakes terminations in limited significant clinical circumstances for impending intrauterine stillbirth or gross foetal abnormalities not consistent with life,” the statement said.
“This is sensitive and difficult for the patients concerned, and accordingly, AWH will make no further comment or statement.”
Mr Cameron is an Albury councillor, but his comments were made in a private capacity.
