Almost three months after a Wodonga Council ranger picked up Sonny and he was declared a restricted breed, he was returned to Mr Stanic after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal found in his favour.
Wodonga Council has reached an agreement with Mr Stanic over costs it incurred in fighting the case but ratepayers are likely to foot the bill for legal costs and keeping Sonny for almost 80 days.
Mr Stanic will have to pay fines for having Sonny at large and being unregistered, as well as the pound release fee.
He also had to register Sonny ahead of his release.
The case has sparked a wave of comment over social media and the internet, fairly evenly divided between those in support of Sonny’s release and others siding with the council’s decision to fine the owner for failing to register the dog and keep him within their yard.
The whole saga is an important reminder to all pet owners they should do the right thing when it comes to keeping their pets and ensuring they are registered.
Wodonga Council is also likely to make sure it is right next time it decides to declare a dog as a restricted breed.
