A MAN is at risk of losing an eye after he was struck by a stray firework on New Year’s Eve.
The Albury man, 27, had been at a house party in Beechworth Road, Wodonga, when someone let off fireworks about midnight.
One of the fireworks ricocheted off a fence and struck him in the eye.
He was taken to Albury Base Hospital with serious injuries, and police were notified of the incident about 1am yesterday.
They said tests were being conducted to determine if his eye could be saved.
The man was transferred in a stable condition to the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital by air ambulance about 9.30am yesterday.
The hospital would not release details of his condition yesterday.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the man did not appear to have suffered any other injuries.
“He ended up getting one in his eye,” Mr Mullen said.
“He suffered swelling around the eye and the face.”
Wodonga police are investigating the matter and are trying to determine what led to the injuries.
“Police know all parties involved and who was there,” Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer said.
The matter is now being investigated to see what happened.
Acting Sgt Surrey Hunter said the city was otherwise quiet and revellers were well-behaved,
“It was a very quiet night. There were no dramas with people being intoxicated,” he said.
“The crowd at Birallee Park were well behaved and enjoyed a family night.
“We didn’t really have much happen.”
