Goodwin, who joined Sydney club Mounties late last year, is booked in for shoulder surgery early next month after scans revealed a torn tendon.
The star lock dislocated his shoulder on the eve of last season’s finals series but underestimated the seriousness of the injury as he bravely played on.
“I thought it would just heal itself but it wasn’t getting any better at training,” Goodwin said.
“I had it checked out and they told me the bad news.
“It’s pretty disappointing.
“I will get a second opinion but at the moment I’m booked in for surgery.”
The injury is a devastating setback for the 2014 Weissel medallist who was eager to return to NRL ranks after three seasons with Albury Thunder.
Goodwin joined the group 9 club after captaining the Sydney Roosters under-20 side.
“Training was going well at Mounties but my shoulder just wasn’t right,” he said.
Goodwin’s place at Greenfield Park has been taken by Andrew Smith.
