But for one Albury teenager, Lucy Findlay, the highlight of the day will be floating down the Murray River.
She reckons Australia Day would not be complete without a picnic with friends at Noreuil Park, followed by a float.
The 16-year-old has a jam-packed schedule that will also include heading out to Lake Hume in the afternoon for a swim and a barbecue with family.
“It’s a great day to hang out and have fun with your friends and family,” Miss Findlay said.
Today in Albury, new citizens will be welcomed and awards presented at a ceremony at Noreuil Park from 10am.
It will be followed by live music and free entertainment.
Similar events will take place at Les Stone Park in Wodonga and elsewhere around the region.
Wodonga’s event will kick off with a barbecue breakfast from 7am, followed by a citizenship ceremony and Australia Day awards from 8.30am.
