The first-year Victorian National Premier League club played two trials at the weekend, including a Sunday night clash with FFA Cup fairytale team Bentleigh Greens.
Murray United bolstered its senior squad with some “invited triallists” for the clash against the team that only bowed out of the cup in the semi-final to A-League leader Perth Glory.
But technical director Paul Millynn said there was no issue with numbers.
“We have a pretty strong squad in the seniors and we expect they will be more than competitive after what we saw at the weekend,” he said.
“Bentleigh Greens said most sides they trial against don’t try to play the ball out of defence, preferring to hit it long looking to counter attack.
“They believe our squad will be more than competitive and were also impressed with the way we pressed their players.
“We brought in a group of players on Sunday who are still on the fringe, still considering their playing future and we wanted to give them a taste of the sort of football they will be playing in the NPL.
“But when a two-week registration window opens next week we will have a full squad.”
Millynn admitted the under-14 team was looking for players but believed there were a number of solutions available.
The Border Mail understands an entire club can be penalised by the failure to field a team in each age division, but was unable to verify that yesterday.
“There is an issue with the under-14s but we are working with the Albury Wodonga Football Association to address that and the feeling we get is that they are willing to work with us too,” Millynn said.
“It may be the NPL side is also the AWFA rep team, but we are looking at how that all works.
“The idea was Murray United would be a local club for local players but if that option falls over there is plenty of interest from academies in Melbourne who have players looking to be part of an NPL club, play at a higher level.
“Either way we will find a solution.”
